Golden Hour 03:13
Well I don’t mind lying Low in the summer I’m hiding out In a country town Well I might die trying Not to blow my cover I’m skulking round Back roads at night But any blow-in they’ll accept Just kick a goal straight off the bench I’ve got my corner stool at the bar Seven pots of heavy deep And it’s the cocky’s shout His old man called him Jack Death The young bloke Went and rolled his ute down the Mad Mile Now he’s stumped since he blew bad breath Local names go back for generations Worked their lives in dirt and dust My hands show I’ve never done an honest day They ask me how I earn a crust Distant tractors grumble A light drift of ester Lace curtains drawn On the Golden Hour Yeah the sun keeps pounding My weatherboard enclosure In this paradise I’m gonna do my time

White Army 05:50
Guard the fire station Take 300 rounds The Major said ‘tonight boys An uprising's going down’ Well the Nuns are stocking guns in the convent You got your finger on the trigger But you ain’t got no enemy yet Diggers in the trenches Defend the edge of town The Doctor can't be trusted That’s the word that’s going ‘round Mr Kelly's hiding something in his shed You got your finger on the trigger But you can’t see the enemy yet Pitchforks and rifles That swagman looks suss Old man up a gum tree Shadows moving past the pumps Just a little innuendo feeds this threat You got your finger on the trigger But you ain’t got no enemy yet One itchy digit And this town might get scratched A house evacuated Watch the neighbours being watched Look out! There might be some under your bed You got your finger on the trigger But you can’t see the enemy yet Have you thought it might be all inside your head? You got your finger on the trigger But you ain’t got no enemy yet

Burra 05:10
I’ve never been up to Burra Some towns have a lot to explain I moved to the city with your brother You went way up to the Goyder Line Well the news hit town like a thunderstorm of tears A cool change that remained Now your nephew has your dark hair And your quiet charm All the little animals made from clay There’s a sweeping bend So far from the Single Tree Road How it took you away They’re shearing the rams up at Burra An oil painting just fades away Lambs jump saltbush one after another You weren’t the reckless kind Remove a rock out from a dry-stone wall It still holds up but it’s never the same The old 120Y With your kelpie pup by your side Oh now that’s how it will remain There’s a sweeping bend So far from the Single Tree Road Oh how it took you away Jackaroo…

I’m from wheat lands Sunsets on the lake Where you don’t need a mountain To see a long way But I’ve climbed some Like Kilimanjaro When I find my love We’ll sit on Mount Jeffcott I know patience Like the old farmer Who after Mass said ‘It should be a good year’ The hall on the highway They’re taking their partners For the Pride of Erin Your cousin gave Your number to text Came ten thousand miles In your ancestor’s footsteps (Let’s take) two steps forward One, two, three kick Back two, three In your arms let me rock Oh you might long For old Shannon Harbour But we’ll go on And waltz round together Side by side I hear the bodhran And here comes my Pride of Erin Yes I’m your bride My heart is dancing For my Pride of Erin

Joni's Ocean 03:40

Bush landscape scenes The old family home Just you at the piano With your roll-your-own Well the city’s thermal mass Warms you to its bars But it never gets dark Enough to see the stars Those Roald Dahl dreams All that imagination We’ll hang on every word Need no illustration Fitzroy’s got the poison While up there the snake’s got venom Ah but if your skin is thick enough It can never get in You could paint a Picasso picture With your palette of words and old sounds Sing us all those brush strokes matey With all of your ups and downs So cast another spell And reel ‘em all back in That grin from ear to ear They want to hear you sing ‘There’s no earthly way of knowing Which direction we are going There’s no knowing where we’re rowing Or which way the river’s flowing’ We could sail the wildest oceans With the stars just to lead us around Holler at all the swells below rolling Ho they go up and down Climb aboard the rocket ship To the stars where the darkness surrounds Laugh at all the space junk floating Up, up, up and down You could paint a Picasso picture With your palette of words and old sounds Sing us all those brush strokes matey With all of your ups and downs

Slowing Down 04:12
Donald town in my mirror AM radio I got a full tank from Micky Raynes His one liner had me laughing All the way past Charlton Guess I’m not the only one that entertains Done more country miles Than the old Vinelander And I’ve never seen a road that’s boring An Eksy and a six pack and a Keyboard in the back While my sangas almost finished thawing I’m taking pills For my heart palpitations I’m singing songs For my superannuation But I’m slowing down for no one Can’t you see? As long as this stuff Still sounds good to me Well my first year back on farm It didn’t rain And I was left with nothing to do So I ripped the front off Mum’s piano While my farming hopes blew past the window And I played all the summer through In the early days we were three Across the front bench seat of my HT Jimmy in the middle with a bottle of beer Clocking up a thousand miles a week Blowing up engines, going like stink Sleep was a lunchtime necessity We used to get a lotta work Playing Young Farmers Balls These days I’ve got an earner Rocking old timers’ halls And I’m slowing down for no one Can’t you see? As long as this stuff Still sounds good to me Still smell the Bundy I don’t miss the smokes I guess that you can’t die now From a white post overdose One day they’ll say ‘the old grey mayor ain’t what he used to be’ Well they can take away my licence They’ll never take my keys Had a good run down to Brunswick yesterday And I’m gonna play this one out to the end And I’m slowing down for no one Can’t you see? As long as this stuff still sounds good to me

When I was a little squirt I didn’t know much I grabbed the meat on the string Sat on the dam bank cursing my luck They said ‘too small’ and threw me back in Well the yabby seasons came and went Until I was old and blue A beer bottle long from tip to tail Lost a claw in a mud fight in 1992 Off I travelled, upstream channels And down flooded rivers But the world left me in frustration So I came back to my old farm dam Like a prodigal crustacean But all I found was the dry dam bed Cracked and parched like a sunburnt face So I’m digging right down to find my muddy home Ain’t coming back up ‘til this drought breaks Swimming backwards…
